Want To Change Your Cars Oil? Here's What You Need

One of the easiest ways to keep your car in good running condition is to change the oil. Even if you are not mechanically inclined, you can probably change your cars oil.  All you need are a few tools and some preparation. It helps if you have a garage or an outdoor space to work with.

Here is a list of the things you need to change your cars oil.

Motor Oil

The first thing you need to have is engine oil. Of course, you need to get the right oil. Don't just walk into an auto-supply store and grab the first quart of oil you see. Get out your owner's manual and consult it to see which is the proper grade of oil. If you put in the wrong oil it won't kill the engine, but it's not optimal.

Oil Filter Wrench

In order to drain the oil you will need to loosen a nut. There are two ways to do this. The first method is to get a socket wrench and use an oil filter socket attachment. The other method is to get an adjustable oil filter wrench. These can fit most cars oil filters. If you don't own a socket set, then you should just get an oil wrench.

Oil Drain Pan

An oil drain pan is going to catch all of the old oil that you drain out of the car. When you remove the drain plug, oil will come pouring out of the engine.

Don't try and save money by using a bucket. That will end up being really messy and bothersome. An oil drain pan that has a screen and can be capped is the best one to buy. The screen prevents the bolt from falling into the oil if it slips out of your hands.

The reason you want an oil drain pan that can be capped is that you are going to have to dispose of the oil. This means you will have to transport it in your car to a service station. You don't want to have to carry old motor oil in a makeshift container. So, get an oil drain pan that has a cap and will seal up tight.

Funnel

This is helpful for when you are adding new oil to the engine. If you try and pour oil out of the container straight into the engine, you might spill some on the engine block. This will burn and smoke later while you are driving.

Jack Stands or Drive Up Ramps

The oil drain plug is located underneath the car. In order to access it you will need to lift the car. You can do this either by lifting up the car and sliding jack stands underneath the sides, or by driving up onto ramps.

They are both viable options. Ramps tend to be more stable, and they are also quicker to setup. All you have to do is line the ramps up with the front tires and then drive onto them. This will raise the front of the car into the air and leave the rear tires on the ground. You can then slide under the car and drain the oil.

New Oil Filter

Don't forget a new oil filter. You don't want to change the old oil, but leave in a dirty filter. You don't access the filter from underneath the car; rather, they are located from under the hood. Make sure to lubricate the new filter with fresh oil before screwing it into place.

If all of this sounds a bit too complicated, then head over to a qualified oil change center, such as London Tire Sales Ontario. You don't want to neglect your engine oil.
